EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH

There’s no story line. Just dialogue, music and dance.

The lyrics are composed of numbers and “do-re-mi” notes only.

The same sounds and movements that go round and round – until it draws you into a unique euphoria.

Is this a drama?

Perhaps a dance performance?

Or maybe an opera?

“Einstein on the Beach” is four hours of nonstop theatrical spectacle, created by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson, the globally renowned composer and theater director, respectively. The American pair with uncanny talents attempt to convey their interpretation of who the scientist Albert Einstein was through this avant-garde opera.

The premier of “Einstein on the Beach” in 1976 marked a defining moment for opera fans, forever changing their concept of what an opera is. Forty-six years later, the new production of this masterpiece will debut in Japan this October, under the directorship of and with the choreography provided by Shintaro Hirahara – the choreographer and dancer known for his work for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 opening and closing ceremonies. Hirahara and Conductor Yoshinao Kihara, who will conduct the music, will take you through the fascinating world of Einstein that gradually and continuously unfolds on the stage.

「魔法の笛」

「魔法の笛」は、モーツァルトの作曲したオペラ「魔笛」を、子どもたちや初めてオペラを体験する方々に、その素晴らしさを知ってほしいと願い、本来上演時間が２時間以上ある「魔笛」を、バリトン歌手の宮本益光（みやもとますみつ）氏が、元の台本や音楽の内容をコンパクトにまとめ、長谷川初範 (はせがわはつのり) 氏によるナレーションを取り入れながら、より分かりやすく親しみやすく構成しました。

この「魔法の笛」は、モーツァルト・シンガーズ・ジャパンの歌手の皆さん、東京交響楽団オペラアンサンブルの皆さんとともに、指揮者のキハラ良尚が、五島記念文化賞オペラ新人賞研修成果発表として上演しました。こどもから大人まで多くの方々が、オペラや音楽に親しんでくださいますように。この動画は「魔法の笛」の公演のハイライトです。
